Fred Carter Folk Art Collection

In Spring 2018, the late Fred Carter's daughters agreed to loan UVa-Wise and the Center for Appalachian Studies their father's extensive collection of folk art.  Carter, a Clintwood artist, produced these pieces after his fiftieth birthday and has become one of the nation's most intriguing folk artists.  During the Spring and Summer 2018, CAS intern Jessica Lowe led the Center's efforts to catalog the individual pieces and develop interpretive files on each.  Jessica's efforts resulted in a Summer and Fall showing and a public presentation on her work, all funded by a Summer Research Grant.

The Fred Carter Folk Art Collection has returned to the Carter Family.
